Community forums scheduled to seek feedback about BCPS school facilities

Background: As BCPS continues examining long-term planning to accommodate growth, the school system is committed to incorporating stakeholder viewpoints in its planning process. To do so, five community forums have been scheduled to gather public priorities related to the needs of both existing and future physical facilities.
 Baltimore County Public Schools will host five community forums this fall that have
been scheduled to solicit feedback from students, parents, stakeholders and others about school facilities across the school district.

When & Where: Each of the five forums listed below is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.:

  • Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at Catonsville High School, 421 Bloomsbury Avenue, Catonsville 21228
  • Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at Perry Hall High School, 4601 Ebenezer Road, Perry Hall 21236
  • Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at Chesapeake High School, 1801 Turkey Point Road, Essex 21221
  • Thursday, October 16, 2014, at Loch Raven High School, 1212 Cowpens Avenue, Towson 21286
  • Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at New Town High School, 4931 New Town Boulevard, Owings Mills 21117

School Clubs…Child Care Sign Up….and More….

Good Afternoon GES Family,

Just a few quick announcements and reminders.

School Clubs: The PTA has recently added a new committee; School Clubs. We will be collaborating with the school this year to help organize school clubs. Last year we had several awesome clubs such as, chess, Communications, Gems, Student Council, Math, etc. This year we are looking for volunteers who would be willing to help lead a school club before or after school. We are also requesting ideas for new clubs for this school year.  If you have an idea for a new club or would like to help organize or run a before or afterschool club, please contact our School Clubs Committee Chair, Sandy Jones at schoolclubs@gunpowderpta.org

Child Care-Monthly PTA Meeting: Our next PTA board meeting will be held on next Tuesday, September 16th at 6:30pm in the school library. If you are in need of child care to attend the meeting, please email me ASAP to reserve your space. President@gunpowderpta.org All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Hot Dog Night: If you are donating a baked good or case of soda you may drop of your donation in the main hallway of the school lobby anytime Friday. We would like to have all donations there by 4:30pm, if possible. To make other arrangements, please send me an email at President@gunpowderpta.org

Movie Night: We are looking for someone who would be willing to co-chair this event.  This event is NOT time consuming.  The first of two movie nights is scheduled for Friday, October 3rd from 6-8:30pm.  If you would like to hear more about the responsibilities of the movie chair, please contact me at President@gunpowderpta.org

Spiritwear: Our Spiritwear sale is in full swing, so don’t forget to check out the GES Spirtwear online store at www.adverteesva.com/gunpowder We will be extending our sale through September 30th due to the late opening of the online store.

Membership: Don’t forget to join the PTA! Every class and our teachers will be eligible for a pizza party if they have 100% membership participation. Check out the Join The PTA link above to join online!

World’s Finest Candy: Our candy fundraiser will begin on Tuesday, September 16th. All student carriers (one child per family) will be bringing home a variety box of candy bars to sell. You should be receiving information home this week regarding the sale. For any questions, please contact our candy fundraiser chair, Felicia Steele at candybars@gunpowderpta.org

Date change: Spiritwear online store opening Monday September 8th

The Gunpowder Spiritwear online store opening has been delayed. Due to unforeseen circumstances from the vendor, the new opening of the site will be Monday September 8th and the sale will be extended to September 30th. The address will remain  http://www.adverteesva.com/gunpowder

Weekly PTA Blast – 8/30/14

Good Afternoon GES Family,

We have our first week of school already down. I hope that everyone has been adjusting well and is looking forward to another great week ahead.

Unlike last year, this year I will be doing my weekly “email” blast on our website by way of a post. You have the option to receive this post and any others we make on our website during the week by signing up for our email list (located in the bottom right hand corner of this page). Your weekly email will come on Sunday afternoon around 2pm and will include all the posts for the prior week and will list any upcoming events.

We are off to a great year and have many fun and exciting things planned for the GES community.  Below I have listed a few committee updates and upcoming PTA and School events/activities for the coming weeks. As always, feel free to contact myself or another PTA board member with any questions or concerns.

Back To School Night: Sept. 2nd
We hope you can make it to Back To School Night this Tuesday, Sept. 2nd starting at 6:30pm. The PTA will have our first general membership meeting of the year. We plan on approving the budget, introducing the executive officers for the year and mentioning a few highlights and events. We will also have a volunteer and information table, PTA memberships table, Spiritwear table with t-shirts available for sale, Bingo tickets, and a table for Watch Dogs signup. Please stop by the info table if you have any questions.

Spirit Wear Sale: Sept. 2 – Sept. 23
Spritwear will run from Tuesday, Sept. 2nd – Tuesday, Sept. 23th. We will also have a limited number of shirt available for Back To School Night, this Tuesday night. You can shop our Spiritwear sale HERE  starting Tuesday. For more information please contact our Spiritwear Chairs Amy Mantegna & Tracy Mason at spiritwear@gunpowderpta.org

Hot Dog Night: Friday, Sept. 12th
Our first PTA event of the year will take place on Friday, September 12th at Gunpowder Elementary School from 5:30pm-7:00pm. Please send your RSVP’s in so we know how many people to expect and can have your tickets available for pickup. Beef Brothers will be there to provide the hotdogs, Kona Ice will be on hand for those who would like to purchase a treat. The event is free for PTA members (and their minor children) and is $5 per person for non-PTA members (including children). We are also still in need of volunteers and donations. World’s Finest Candy Sale: Starting Tuesday, Sept. 16th
Please be aware that our World’s Finest Candy Sale is set to begin on Tuesday, September 16th and will run through Friday, October 3rd. Candy will be sent home with carriers ONLY. If you would like a box to be sent home with all of your children or if you have any additional questions, please contact Felicia Steel our World’s Finest Candy Sale chair at candybars@gunpowderpta.org

8/21/14 Kindergarten Playdate Venue and Time Changes….

Good Afternoon Parents and Guardians,

Our kindergarten playdate that was scheduled for this evening from 5:00pm – 6:30pm at Gunpowder Elementary has be relocated and there has been a change in time due to potential rain in the forecast. We will now be meeting from 6:15pm – 7:45pm at Perry Hall Baptist Church located at 3919 Schroeder Avenue, Perry Hall, MD 21128. We will be meeting in the gym.

The church has agreed to allow us to use the gym and will be supplying us with the use of their bounce house, a wavier will need to be signed prior to your child using the bounce house. Children will be broken up into groups based on their class assignments and will travel by station with their class to the different activities scheduled.

Welcome to the Gunpowder Elementary PTA Website!

You have arrived at the “new”  home of the Gunpowder Elementary PTA. We hope you will find the NEW design and format of our NEW website to be both user-friendly and informative. We invite you to check out each of the above tabs. Our “Info” tab has links to school forms, event flyers, information about Gunpowder PTA committees, and more. The “Contact Us” tab offers the ability for you to get in touch with your PTA Executive Officers, PTA Committee Chairs and the Teachers and Staff at GES. Our “Events Calendar” page tells you everything going on at the school this month and in the months ahead. “Fundraising”  gives you an overview of what our fundraisers will be this year as well as link you to all the Rebate Programs that the school and PTA participate in. Our “Join the PTA” page is new this year with our brand new website. We will now be able to have members join and pay for their annual PTA memberships through Square. So make sure you check this new feature out and join today!  “Volunteer” tab, which can direct you to the BCPS volunteer online training and instructions, the school and PTA volunteer needs through VolunteerSpot, and our volunteer hour tracking system. Another new feature this year is our “PTA Store”. This page will link you directly to our Square online Market Place that will show our current items for sale, whether it be Bingo tickets, PTA Memberships or PTA Spiritwear merchandise you can find all that through this link. Finally, there is our “Newsletter” link. Here you will find our collaborative Newsletter with the school. Look for some BIG changes to our newsletter this fall!

We are off to a great start this school year with lots of new and positive changes. So stay in the loop with the PTA and school and be sure to register for our email list. You can expect to receive weekly automated messages on Sunday summarizing the latest website posts and upcoming events.

Please check out our new combined School & PTA VolunteerSpot page. Here you can sign up to volunteer for School & PTA activities and events. Teachers and room parents will be able to list classroom volunteer needs, donations needs and more. Special area teachers will be able to recruit volunteers for their classes as well. So check back often or book mark the page to gain access to the many volunteer and donation opportunities within our school and PTA!

PTA Calendar Downloads

calendar-150x150The PTA calendar on the website will download directly into your smart phone or computer. Click “Calendar” on the top menu bar or click “View Calendar” on the left sidebar. Once you are on the calendar page you can input which grades your children are in by clicking the “Category” button at the top left side of the calendar view. Then click on “Subscribe to filtered calendar” in the bottom left corner and select the appropriate calendar application. The calendar information will then be downloaded to your smart phone or computer.

Most dates have been entered, but as always, dates are subject to change. Please check back prior to events for any possible changes.

Good Evening GES Family,

Please help me by welcoming Mrs. Wendy Cunningham, acting principal of GES. Mrs. Cunningham has been working in Baltimore County as a teacher, resource teacher, and assistant principal for 19 years.

Announced through an email to our current GES families today, several Family Meet and Greets have been scheduled. Mrs. Cunningham is very excited to meet the students and families of Gunpowder.

I am very much looking forward to working with Mrs. Cunningham and Mrs. Kahan next year and wish them both a successful school year!
